DESTINATION GUIDE

The Get Real Denver blog has detailed information on all the best of the city, from cheap eats to dance and theater, as well as a detailed events calendar. INTELLIGENT TRAVEL

2. Picking the Right Guidebook

In his recent book Do Travel Writers Go to Hell? a very smug Thomas Kohnstamm confesses to accepting bribes, plagiarizing text, and not even visiting the countries he was covering for travel publisher Lonely Planet. One man's publicity nightmare is another man's royalty check, yes, but where does this leave the traveler? How reliable is any one guidebook and how can travelers avoid buying fiction when they're looking for facts? For starters, the popular conception of the travel writer is a myth. "We do not run around the world with limitless corporate credit cards getting free spa packages and business-class upgrades," says guidebook author Andrew Evans. So how does it happen? Find out what Evans has to say about picking the right guidebook, and get more travel news and tips by subscribing to IT here.

SMART TRAVELER

4. Medical Coverage on the Road

Not all health insurance travels with you. While many insurance companies cover U.S. travelers abroad, helicopter rescue, ambulance rides, and hospital stays (as well as injuries from extreme sports like bungee jumping and sky diving) are often excluded from major policies. Travelers should always check with their insurance provider before leaving home: Often getting a separate insurance policy (which could cover trip cancellations or lost luggage) for traveling abroad is best. AUTHENTIC SHOPPING GUIDE

5. Shopping for Guatemalan Textiles

Mayans in the Guatemalan highlands are still weaving beautiful textiles much the same way as their ancestors have done for 1,200 years. Today, women weave cotton and wool on a backstrap loom, which is looped around the weaver and seated on the ground. Many weavers now use chemical dyes to color the fibers, though some still use natural dyes derived from moss, bark, and other plants. Learn more about this technique and what to look for when buying traditional handmade Guatemalan textiles, like the huipil (pronounced "wee-peel"), in Laura Morelli's shopping guide.

"I hunker down beside a hay roll and begin the laborious process of putting up my tent in the windy darkness. Once inside I climb into my sleeping bag and stare at the flickering candle in my lamp. The words of the weatherman are ringing inside my head: 'This storm is a killer. This storm is a killer.'"

—John Francis, Ph.D., from the book Planet Walker
